One of my cold wax pieces from the @William Kent Krueger Series is in The Art of a Story 13th Annual Juried Art Exhibit at The Village Theatre Art Gallery in Danville, CA. This show spoke to me because books are one of my sources of inspiration. I love that the Village Theatre Art Gallery wants to exhibit literary arts manifested into original visual arts. Even when I work alone in the studio, art is always a co-creation for inspiration coming in many forms: from nature, relationships, quotes, and books. My body of work titled with passages from the @William Kent Krueger’s Cork O’Connor book series, Boundary Waters, embodies this collaboration. As I was reading Krueger’s book, I saw the paintings in my mind’s eye before I created them. From these visceral descriptions and images, I turned Krueger’s rich descriptions and poignant metaphors into cold wax paintings. Enjoy this show which will be up until September 30th. The work included in this show is cold wax and oil on wood panel. The properties of cold wax fascinate me and keep me curious; how the underlying layers inform and alter the layers applied over them, how incising and scraping, and glazing make more changes. I know I am wielding the palette knife and mixing the colors, but what happens on the panel is beyond my control. I’m learning how to be fine with the state of ‘not knowing’.
